Lunch Club members had a week of celebrating VE Day in our best tradition this month, with memories, and some fun. At Staindrop Club our chef Owen designed a special VE Day menu of ‘The Full Monty’ (mushroom soup), ‘Some Chicken Some Neck’ and ‘Victory Roll’ for dessert – yes that was good old jam roly-poly and custard!
Tables were decorated and the halls hung with Union Jack flags. Everyone raised a glass and shared in the fun.
At Cotherstone Club, Gill arranged for some very special visitors to make an appearance and it looks as if Karen got a special audience!
Meanwhile, there was some trying out of the tin hats and gas mask – evoking what it might have felt like to be living through the experience of war in the last century. How little protection those helmets were in comparison to the kind of full headgear our soldiers wear these days! How brave people were.
How lucky we are here in this beautiful part of the world to be living in freedom and peace, as we remember that not everyone is as fortunate.
We honour those who walk among us still, those who carry the memories of loss and hardship, and we honour and remember those men and women of Teesdale that lost their lives to protect our freedoms.
