Marshall's cafe, Galgate, Barnard Castle

Join us for an afternoon of mindful slow stitching. These funded drop-in sessions are held at Marshall’s cafe on Galgate in Barnard Castle 1-3pm. No sewing or crafting experience is necessary.

Andrea Hobbs is an experienced group facilitator and will bring along a small suggested Slow Stitch project – but you can bring any project of your own – everything to do with stitches and stitching is welcome – darning socks, knitting scarves, patching clothes, tapestry – or just bring your hands that want to make something but you don’t know where to start!

If you have a project you need help with, bring it along as Andrea can usually help you out to get unstuck.

Come along for a relaxed afternoon where you can sew at your own pace with others.

Each session will be relaxed and informal.

These sessions are funded by Teesdale Day Clubs but a donation of £5 is suggested to help us to keep these sessions going –   and you can support this lovely cafe by buying drinks and snacks as this is a not for profit community space.

Slow stitching is a recognised way of working that places emphasis on sensory enjoyment, a relaxed pace, a mindful approach, and an intuitive and creative way that does not require perfectionism or being skilled in needlework. There is plenty of evidence that making things with our hands calms our nervous system  helping us to relax when stressed, and improving low mood or anxiety.

This group is particularly aimed at people who are lonely, or who feel isolated. And it’s not just for women – plenty of men do stitch work and everyone is welcome – although you may find it is mostly women of course!

Andrea Hobbs brings her knowledge of working in our community as a manager at Teesdale Day Clubs, together with her experience in creative therapies and facilitating groups. More information about Andrea can be found here.

In 2026 this activity is funded by the Pioneering Care Partnership Happiness Hub fund, and by The National Lottery Community Fund Reaching Communities grant award.
